When considering starting a family

September 15, 2015

I come from a big family. I love kids—lots of my siblings have them. I'm young and right now I'm not ready to start a family. But that does not mean I won't want kids in the future. I guess I just want to keep my options open. Managing my MS is a top priority for me. But is there more for me to think about?

Hoping for a Family

Nurse Claire replies:

Of course, choosing if and when to have kids is a deeply personal decision. But lots of people living with MS have children.

If the time comes when you really are considering starting a family, begin a conversation with your healthcare team EARLY. This includes talking to those in your neurologist's office. Don't wait until you want to start trying. By the way, most experts will tell you that if you're having a relapse or flare-up, it's not the ideal time to choose going off your relapsing MS medication.
